Shillo Stories: Matt Roberson

Hey, I'm Matt. Since graduating from Shillington, I’ve worked as an in-house designer for several not-for-profits, including my current role as Senior Designer at New York’s famed 92nd Street Y. When not making stuff, I’m either hanging with my kids, playing golf or listening to music.
Inspiring me
I recently watched a short doc on top NY restaurant Eleven Madison Park. Though I can’t afford to eat there, I’m really inspired by their constant quest to create the perfect atmosphere for those who do.
No detail is too small or too unimportant. I find that really applies to the life of a designer and what we’re trying to do.

On reflection
Coming out of school, I imagined myself napping on a bed of awards at a super sexy New York branding studio. That didn’t happen, but landing as an in-house was the perfect situation.
I’ve gotten comfortable designing for everything - print and digital - from giant outdoor building wraps, to the most annoying size of web ad. I’ve made logos, branded entire events and everything in between.

What's cooking?
Currently, my main focus is developing branding for Jazz in July 2024, a well-regarded music festival hosted by 92NY. This year is extra special, as it marks the debut of a new artistic director, who tasked me with taking the look in a more unexpected direction, matching his bold, adventurous programming.
For this project, I’ll tackle a building wrap, posters, web ads, merchandise and more. It’s a pretty cool experience and I feel grateful to work on behalf of a genre of music I really enjoy.
